Study shows shockingly low number of black people working in the industry CONTROVERSIAL: Ethnic minorities are 'largely absent' from British media ETHNIC MINORITIES remain 'largely absent' from senior executive roles and staff jobs within the British media, according to new research. In the study by magazine New Statesman, it was revealed that there were no national newspaper editors or polictical editors who were not white - and that three newspapers did not have any black comment pages. It also highlighted that only one of the '100 most important media people in the Guardian’s 2011 guide' were not white. The special report was said to have been compiled by the publication following of the aftermath of the Stephen Lawrence verdict, which it said had put racism 'at the top of the political agenda'. The New Statesman’s politics senior editor, Mehdi Hasan, told the Press Gazzette: “How long can newspaper editors carry on hiring and publishing columnists who have little or no experience of these lives, backgrounds, cultures or faiths?" He added: "In 2012, 64 years after the arrival of the Empire Windrush on our shores, 36 years after the passage of the third Race Relations Act, 19 years after the racist murder of Stephen Lawrence, the great British commentariat is, in effect, a mono-racial, monocultural closed shop."
